Bulkhead

This is the entrance to the bulkhead. Water from the canal flows through the grates into the bulkhead filtering it of any debris such as tree branches. The handrails are a later addition.
Here is a closer view of the grates. The bulkhead has gates similar to what is on the dam. These were either used to regulate water flowing into the bulkhead or were used to shut off the water for maintenance reasons
This is the front side of the bulkhead. In today's setting, the bulkhead seems far out of place. Constructed of huge granite stones, one can only imagine the magnitude of labor involved in its construction.
A view of the bulkhead from another angle.
